MELISSA NOELLE GREEN
ARTISTIC BIOGRAPHY Melissa Noelle Green is a dynamic and creative educational leader who is recognized as one of the northwest's culturally astute and inspiring word artists. She was born in Seattle, Washington and raised in Los Angeles, California. Art lovers who have witnessed her performance have experienced first hand the power and clarity of her commanding presence. Her debut book of poetry " My Soul Says Yes " was released in the year 2001 is evidence of the culturally instructive, dynamic and passionate articulation of her poetic thought and spoken word. Melissa honed creativity not just as an ardent lover of more traditional poetic art, but as a lover of hip hop cultural music and spoken word artistry. She was immersed in the movement of young artists who held impromptu neighborhood competitions at school and house parties. She was the 2006 director of the play (Movement) Hip Hop Back To Its Roots which premiered in Seattle Washington at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center. A celebration that featured some of the most talented voices in the Pacific Northwest including guests appearances by Davey D, Spinderella and the brilliant Talib Kweli. Melissa also is scheduled to direct another version of Hip Hop Back To Its Roots in 2008 that will explore the contributions and significant impact of the Latino culture and artists from the region of South America. She is also one of founders of the Verbal Rhythms Arts Collective, a monthly platform for social justice through music, hip hop and spoken word. Melissa is the 2004 Champion of the Umoja Fest Poetry in the Park, the 2005 Seattle Mayor's award recipient for hip hop/spoken word; she is the 2006 Poetry Slam Champion awarded at Pacific Lutheran University's Invitational Poetry Slam event. In 2007 Melissa was selected to be on the roster for Pacific Northwest talent with 4Culture and joined the Federation of BC Writers. Melissa has worked with various youth organizations including Atlantic Street Center and Zion Prep Academy, to teach poetry and writing workshops. Melissa is an advent supporter of local and National artistic organizations like the Academy of American Poets, National Endowment of the Arts, and International Hip Hop. Melissa has performed theatrically in the Seattle and New York Maafa. She has been featured in the Seattle Post Intelligencer, The Seattle Times and Colors NW Magazine. |
